In writing about Walmart Savings Catcher in this blog post, I hope you see a theme that I'm living the principals of the new middle class hustle I laid out here. I used to do a very very minor version of extreme couponing as I would just purchase one Sunday newspaper and use the coupons out of it in conjunction with information about sales/discounts at Walmart on CouponMom.com for products I plan to buy to ensure I get for as near to free as I can.
Of course you can imagine that it takes time to cut out coupons, review ad sales circulars and organize which competitors have on sale the products you are shopping for, and then execute the plan before sales expire. I used to go several different stores to buy a product on sale before I saw a customer at Walmart just showing newspaper ad of competitor's price and the cashier matching the price on the spot. Wow, I didn't know that and here I was going to Kroger or HEB to get that price using more gas then I needed too.
So then, for a short time I was using coupons and stacking with price matching by bringing newspaper ad circular of competitor with items I circled that were cheaper than Walmart price and bam, they would match on the spot. I liked seeing that bill go down, but this took longer for me to checkout and you can imagine other customers in line being pissed I was taking all day, but bump that, I was trying to stretch those hard earned dollars I work for day in day out. I could never get the balance as low as some of the folks I saw on Extreme Couponing shows, but that was alright because I did not want to invest that much time in trying to save money and to consume a bunch of stuff I don't need or use.
I think Walmart must have realized that this price matching would slow their checkout times if there are a bunch of cheap asses like me trying to get every discount, but they would rather you spend those dollars in their store instead of going up the street to Kroger, Randall's, HEB, etc. Moreover, the drawback for me was I still had to spend time looking at ad circulars to find items cheaper which meant I was using my valuable time doing so until Walmart came out with technological innovation in 2014 called Walmart Savings Catcher.
Walmart Savings Catcher allows you to simply scan your Walmart receipt with a smartphone or enter the TC number in online at savingscatcher.walmart.com and it then goes out and price matches the products you purchased against other competitors and if it finds a lower price it credits you the difference of money back on those item(s). You can then get a Walmart Rewards eGift Card or Bluebird by American Express with the money credited to you by Walmart Savings Catcher to use at future date only at Walmart. Here is the thing, I shop at Walmart all the time for my groceries and stuff and I own Walmart stock, so I don't personally mind that my money stays in Walmart's ecosystem, but I do want to stretch my dollars and not have to spend a whole lot of my time to do so. This is effective way to do just that!
I might wind up with about $10 - $25 back in a month and if I stack Walmart Savings Catcher, with coupons, and Ibotta (more on this service in blog at later time) for spending of $400 between my wife and I. That amount could be even more if you utilize a credit card that gives you 3% or 6% cashback on groceries. The bottom line is this tool can help stretch your dollars and you don't need to use a bunch of your time to do so .
